My old boss used to say “how are ya travelling” rather than how are you going or how are you. I used to think it was a bit weird at the time.
Yet each of us is on a journey, and we all have a different road but hopefully to the same destination. You caravaner’s travelled here with your accommodation attached, Marianne and the boys and I travelled here by commodore, others by other means. I used to travel by bicycle a lot, cycle touring, racing or just to work. I go to
What we don’t often do is evaluate is how we are travelling with Jesus? How our relationship to God is going. What about you, have you thought about that recently, how am I with God?
Let’s have a bit of a look at it today.
- The first evaluation point must be: Are we travelling God’s road?
Ex 13:21 By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people. This story is about God exactly where He wants the people to go. It doesn’t appear that cut and dried to us. Working out God’s direction is tough sometimes. But a wise man once said to me – If you don’t know what to do, do what you do know you have to do. In other words – We know how to live – it’s in the bible so do that first and foremost, but for other direction, maybe specific direction, we need to wait for the specific leading.
God’s road is what God shows us.
- Are we being a follower on the road? These days we see so many people wanting to be in the lead, or making the decisions. Even our churches are sending people off to be better equipped leaders. Unfortunately, we aren’t sending people off to seminars on how to be better followers. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians is often the cry. No body wants to be told what to do or do what needs to be done. But Jesus said “Follow Me”. He didn’t say come and be a leader in a new movement but follow me.
Matt 4:19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.Followers to be what – Fishers of men. People who catch men for Jesus. That leads us to the next point.
- Are we preparing the road for others? Are we making it easy for people to get to know God? Or are we making it easy for God to communicate to the people. Look at this verse.
ISA 40:3 A voice of one calling: “In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.Preparing the way for the Lord. Now we know this is a prophetic statement regarding Jesus. John the Baptist was that voice in the wilderness.
MT 3:1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the desert, `Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ “Are we carrying on the mission of John the Baptist. I would like to think so. (After all I am John and a Baptist!!)
- How much further have we to travel? Remember your kids saying in the back seat “Are we there yet?” Well we don’t know do we. The following bit is what we need to focus on today. How are we travelling, are we following Jesus fully, what do we need to change or adjust as we go? We need to make the commitment as Joshua did. “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord” Remember the story, The Israelites were nearly in the promised land, Next day they would be. Joshua makes the commitment for the next step, and that is to follow God, the very next step and it needs to be an on going commitment for not only the next step but also the one after that and after that.
JOS 24:14 “Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in
