Today we begin to look at a section of Colossians that is practical and ethical in its emphasis, Paul encourages his readers, and that means us, to give outward expression of what we believe in daily living to the experience of knowing Jesus. The Christian life is a life “hidden with Christ in God,” but it is still a life lived out on earth. Christians must give careful attention not only to their inward experience with God but also to their outward relations with their fellow human beings. (more…)

It seems best to take these two verses as a kind of summary appeal made in light of the preceding discussion–an appeal for the readers to remain true to Christ as Lord. 1. COLOSSIANS 1:24 Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. (NIV) No matter what version you read it in it is not encouraging!!!!!Or is it? 2.COLOSSIANS 1: 24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you , and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake , which is the church (KJV) 24 I am glad when I suffer for you in my body, for I am completing what remains of Christ’s sufferings for his body, the church.(NLT) Its talking about Paul getting a hard time and to quote a very wise man – Maxwell Smart – and loving it. Well I don’t know if he was loving it but he had a really interesting perspective on suffering. (more…) Over a long period of time I have been reflecting on the passage in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 where it tells us to “pray continually;” or as I learnt it as a kid from the King James “Pray without ceasing.” It has perplexed me over many years on how to achieve this end and over the years have attempted to develop systems of prayer, attempted to develop formats to maintain prayer as a real focus in my everyday life and find avenues to set times aside for consistent and deliberate prayer. Usually we attempt to describe Him through His characteristics such as Jesus being loving, caring and being there for us. |
